$100 Reward

Tourism around the world has suffered since September 11, 2001, and the effects have been felt not only in my life as a San Francisco taxicab driver, but also in the Philippines, in Tony's life as a trek guide. As of September 1, 2002, he reports just a trickle of tourists visiting the rice terraces. We had both hoped that my book would bring more visitors to the area, but, so far as I know, no one has gone to visit Tony as a result of my book. I'm offering $100 to each of the first five independent travelers who go to Banaue, stay in Tony's new lodge (it's nearing completion), go trekking with Tony, and send me a photo of themselves in Pula, the little village where Tony led me years ago.

I will be thrilled to part with these $500.

(Update, September, 2005 -- So far two people have taken me up on this, by visiting Tony. Three to go...)
